Molecular biology: basic terms and techniques

About the course

  • Learn: This course aims to enhance your understanding of complex terminology of various molecular biology fields, which will prove useful in the current/future workplace.
  • Course for: The Molecular biology: basic terms and techniques course is suitable for scientists who want an update of current molecular biology terms and techniques. It is also useful for staff who work in managerial, sales and marketing roles but not directly in the laboratory and those working in fields associated with molecular biology

  • Polymerase Chain Reaction)
  • Concepts of gene probes, hybridisation, gene libraries, cDNA and cloning
  • Sequencing of DNA and its applications e.g. Human Genome

Project Proteins and Protein Structure

  • Basic methods of protein analysis (including SDS-PAGE and 2-D gels)
  • Further analysis methods (Western blotting, immunodetection)
  • Concepts of proteomics and applications of two-dimensional gels
  • Protein discovery and Proteomics

Computer based Bioinformatics

  • Basic introduction to gene and protein databases
  • Use of browsers to access information on DNA and Proteins
  • Searching sequences over the internet
  • Molecular modelling and three-dimensional protein structures
