Managing and Supporting Offenders with a Learning Disability
Who should attend this course?
This course is for qualified health and/or social care practitioners who support people within forensic services. The course may also be of interest to those working within the prison services and/or broader criminal justice system.
To apply for Level 6 study you must hold a minimum of a Diploma of Higher Education or equivalent. To apply for Level 7 study you must hold a minimum of a first Degree or equivalent. The course can be taken as a stand-alone course or you can use the credits towards a BSc/MSc course at the University.

Course content
The aim of the course is to:
- critically examine the clinical, professional and managerial challenges of supporting forensic environments of care
- enhance your knowledge and best practice in working within forensic services.
The course covers the following topics:
- Epidemiology of offending behaviour learning disability and mental illness
- Bio-psychosocial causes of offending behaviour
- Dangerousness, risk assessment and management
- Deprivation of Liberty, Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act
- Understanding the criminal justice system
- Writing legal reports and giving court evidence
- Critical incidents analysis and staff debriefing
- Ethical issues
- Therapeutic approaches to managing offending behaviours
