Intravenous Injections (Certificate of Competence in Administering )

Who should attend this course?

The Intravenous injections (Certificate of Competence in Administering)course is designed for diagnostic and therapeutic radiographers who are involved in intravenous cannulation as part of their work. Other suitably qualified health care practitioners are also eligible.

To be eligible for the course the participant must be working in an environment where they will be undertaking intravenous injections. It is essential that they are assigned a named supervisor who will be responsible for their clinical training.

This two day course is endorsed by the College of Radiographers.

Course content

The aims of this course is to help you develop the necessary clinical and evaluative skills for the competent performance of intravenous cannulation.

There is a theoretical and practical component of the course.

The theoretical component will be via sessions within the university environment that are undertaken via a variety of mediums to include lectures, group work and practical sessions.

Topics covered include:

• Anatomy and physiology
• Medico-legal issues
• Contrast media and other drugs
• Emergency situations
• Injection procedure

The practical component will be undertaken in the participants working environment.  They will be assigned a named supervisor who will be responsible for their clinical training.

Assessment

Assessment involves satisfactory completion of an in course test prior to clinical work and completion of a clinical portfolio.

Successful participants will be eligible for The College of Radiographers Certificate in Administering Intravenous Injections.

The course also attracts 10 credits at Level 6.
