This is a new and innovative course that has been developed by the Business School and School of Computer Science in partnership with e-skills UK and more than 50 blue-chip sponsoring organisations, including Accenture, BBC, British Airways, Ford, IBM, ITV, Morgan Stanley, Procter & Gamble, Sainsbury's and Unilever.

Rather than focus purely on technical skills, the ITMB course recognises that business, project management, and personal and interpersonal skills are just as important as technical skills for today's professional.

Careers

At the end of the course, you will be equipped with all the knowledge and skills required for management or senior professional careers in designing, developing and implementing technology solutions for businesses. The typical job fields for ITMB graduates will be IT management, strategy and planning, system design and IT consultancy.

Teaching methods

Alongside traditional teaching methods of lectures, seminars and tutorials, we operate a web-based student support system called StudyNet where you can expect to find a range of material and communications about every module.

The teaching method for most modules on the course is a one hour lecture followed by a one hour seminar. Typically, a new topic will be introduced in each lecture.

The seminars provide an opportunity to discuss and obtain feedback on the topic introduced in the previous week's lecture.

Usually, assessment is split between coursework and examination. Coursework may take a variety of forms and could be individual or group work.

Work Placement

The programme includes an optional, but recommended, work placement between your second and final years.

Students are required to spend twelve months working in an office environment. During this time you will be employed by a company and will subsequently be paid; salaries range from £11,500 - £14,000.

• Principles of Marketing

  This initial marketing module, which assumes no prior knowledge of marketing, aims to introduce students to some of the key ideas of marketing and is suitable for both marketing and non-marketing students. It examines the environment within which organisations operate and the role of marketing within the organisation so that students can understand the context within which marketing personnel work, and the different activities which are carried out under the umbrella term of 'marketing'. Concepts central to an understanding of marketing are considered - segmentation; targeting and positioning; the product life cycle; the 4Ps; buyer behaviour, etc.

• Global Perspectives in Business B

  Internationalisation of business is creating a substantial increase in intercultural contact, which is reflected in the skills set of managers operating in a globalised world. Managers need to develop sensitivity to and a critical understanding of issues arising out of cultural difference, and be equipped to manage and operate in diversity. The module will explore themes of: a) concepts of culture, b) cultural differences and c) globalisation. It will also explore related ideas such as ethnocentrism and prejudice. It will look at and draw upon the work of leading theorists, such as Hofstede and Trompenaars, in the analysis of cultural difference. It will look at cross-cultural differences in communication and negotiation style. The workshop element of the module will consider the practical consequences of cultural difference for corporations and sojourners. Types of international corporate culture will be examined, including expatriate staffing policies. The nature of culture shock will be explored.

• Information Systems for Business

  The purpose of this module is to enable students to integrate their understanding of business principles with the IT functions and systems which support the business. On completion of the module, they should have a holistic view of the modern business information system, appreciating the intrinsic value of IS/IT in enabling businesses to achieve their goals. This should provide a solid foundation on which to build progressive study of more specialised topic areas relating to business and/or IS/IT. The following is an indicative list of topics: - Organisations and systems - Data, information and knowledge - Information systems - Applying IS to business - E-business and commerce - Managing information systems: planning, organisation and development - IS success and failure

• Accounting for Business

  The module provides an introduction to accounting from the manager's viewpoint. Areas covered include the collection and reporting of accounting information to both internal and external users, as well as the use and interpretation of publicly available accounting information. The role of accounting in supporting the management functions of planning, control, and decision-making is also covered. Indicative topics include: - preparation and presentation of a simple income statement and balance sheet, including the need for adjustments such as depreciation, accruals, prepayments and bad debts; - the difference between profit and cash; - interpretation of an income statement and a balance sheet using ratio analysis; - costing: cost behaviour; marginal costing - methods and uses; absorption costing - methods and uses; - budgeting: nature and purpose of budgeting; its contribution to planning, control and motivation in an organisation; preparation of simple budgets.

• IT Management for Business

• Programming Principles

  This module is primarily concerned with developing basic skills necessary to produce computer-based solutions to simple problems in a high level language. The emphasis will be on basic programming principles : the structure and syntax of a program in the given programming language, variables and data types, operations and the evaluation of expressions, control structures (sequence, selection, iteration and subroutine call),modularisation(including procedures/functions). Program code will be expected to perform according to specification, be readable, maintainable and well designed. Although the given problems will be relatively simple, there will also be an appreciation of how simple solutions can be used in the solution of more complex problems. • E-Media Design

  There is a long tradition on computer science programmes of teaching about the relationship between data structures and algorithms. Data these days are commonly images, animations, sounds and video, as well as text and numerical characters, and the ways of putting these data together are more varied than ever before. Yet the choice of data construct still depends on the processes you intend to use on that data and the processes you can apply depend on the choice of data structure. On this module, we will examine what motivates design decisions, the importance of creating systems that are fit for their intended purpose and enable students to make straightforward design decisions of their own. Students are referred to the document entitled 'Information for Students' that is issued each year to students on the module for a more detailed description of the syllabus. • Internet Technologies

  This module introduces the underlying infrastructure of the Internet and World Wide Web (WWW). In addition, students will examine how the client-server model works and how it is applied to Internet applications. To this end, students will implement straightforward static and dynamic web pages. Dynamic web pages may also include data retrieved from a database. This module includes basic concepts of: Internet Protocol (IP), TCP (Transfer Control Protocol), HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP), Internet Service Providers (ISPs), the Domain Name System (DNS), client-server model, mark-up languages, client-side programming and server-side programming. At the end of the course, successful students will be able to solve simple problems in the implementation and maintenance of applications for the Internet environment. • Data Driven Systems

  This module provides an introduction to database systems. It takes a practical approach using example applications or case studies. It then builds on this application experience to cover questions of why and how databases are designed and used. This will include practical experience of using a database management system, in particular of using simple SQL to query a database, and thus facilitating the view of the database as part of a larger system. Later in the module underlying formalisms will be studied but from an application-down standpoint -to inform understanding rather than as a subject for study in its own right. • Project Planning and Control

  Project management is essential in all business development and this module gives students hands-on experience of managing the project process. Typical contents include: - An introduction to project management - Project initiation and planning - Working in project teams - Risk identification, analysis and planning - Quality in projects - Project monitoring, evaluation and control - time, cost and quality/performance - earned value - managing changes to the project - project closure and evaluation The module provides a sound basis for further professional studies such as the Association for Project Management (APM) Introductory Certificate in Project Management.

• Modelling Business Problems

  This module introduces the student to the principles and practices involved in the development of models used in organisational environments. The module will provide, through the advanced use of spreadsheets, an ability to build computer-based business models using management science techniques and interpret the output of these models in order to determine the required policies to address management problems. The module typically includes the following topics: - Spreadsheets in business - Business decision modelling using spreadsheet - Statistical analysis - Forecasting methods and models - Validation and documentation of computer models - Computer simulation - Optimisation techniques with Excel - Excel macros - Soft systems

• Information Technology Development Exercise

  This module provides students with the opportunity to create a system in a professional manner, using and developing an appropriate range of skills and knowledge. The system to be developed will typically be a simulation system and the development approach will be based on the use of exploratory design, technical feasibility and agile methods, although reference will be made to structured analysis methods. Personal aspects covered will include communication and group working, while the technical skills wi ll focus on programming and program design, building upon those gained in level 4. Successful completion of this module should equip a student with sufficient skills and knowledge to enable them to successfully apply for and complete an industrial placement. • Computer Networks

  Computer networks underpin almost every form of computing application, so it is important to appreciate the principles of operation of these networks. But computer networks are also extremely complex and hard to understand. This module looks at network applications and the requirements that different kinds of application demand of the underlying network and how those requirements may be characterised. It then looks at the performance of networks and why the network so often seems to be a bottleneck in computer applications. This will lead us into an increasingly detailed examination of what happens when network applications are executed and introduce some of the more important terminology and principles of the subject. • Data Management and Applications A

  The module views databases from two perspectives, one being the architecture and functionality of the database management system, the other being the representation of the data being managed by the database management system. The module provides the principles and the techniques needed to develop relational database systems, together with the database theory on which these principles and teclmiques are found.

• Preparation for Professional Placement in Computer Science

  The module will explain the benefits of the Supervised Work Placement and encourage students to apply. It will support students in their application by informing them about the types of employer and job role available, helping them select the most appropriate for their strengths and weaknesses, and how employers conduct the recruitment process. The module will assist students to make an application, throughout the entire process, via a series of lectures, seminars, individual guidance and online communication. This includes writing of CVs and letters of application, preparation for psychometric and other forms of assessment, and development of interview technique. For those who are successful in securing a placement there will be further help in preparing for employment.

  This module will extend the students’ competence in Italian through the introduction of more advanced language structures. Students will learn to discuss work and future plans, studying and living abroad. They will carry out reading and listening tasks and write texts within the framework of the vocabulary and grammatical structures studied. The module will be largely course book based, supplemented by on-line materials including for example on-line TV news items, blogs and magazine websites.

• Chinese Beginners A2A

  This module broadens and consolidates the students’ competence in Mandarin Chinese. Students will learn to talk about student life and travel, carry out reading and listening tasks and write texts within the framework of the vocabulary and grammatical structures studied. Chinese characters will be introduced. The module will be delivered via on-line materials including video clips and Chinese websites.

The module will be based on materials taken from written and audiovisual materials compiled from a variety of sources such as online newspapers, magazines and company websites. • Italian Intermediate B2A

  This module further improves the students’ competence and confidence from study at levels 4 and 5 in understanding and responding to more advanced written and spoken Italian. Students develop skills which will be of value both professionally and socially and will be exposed to a wider variety of contexts and language registers. The module will enable students to participate more fully in discussions and develop logical argument. They will carry out reading and listening tasks and write texts within the framework of the vocabulary and grammatical structures studied. The module will be largely course book based, supplemented by on-line materials including for example on-line TV news items, blogs and magazine websites.

• Italian Intermediate B2B

  This module enables students to improve further their competence and confidence from the previous semester in understanding and responding to more advanced Italian. Students continue to develop skills which will be of value both professionally and socially. The module will enable students to play a more active and spontaneous part in discussions and to use a wider range of phrases which express different shades of opinion in speaking and writing. They will carry out reading and listening tasks and write texts within the framework of the vocabulary and grammatical structures studied. The module will be largely course book based, supplemented by on-line materials including for example on-line news reports, blogs and magazine websites.

• Japanese Beginners A2B

  This module will extend the students’ competence in Japanese through the introduction of more advanced language structures. Students will learn to discuss work and future plans, studying and living abroad. They will carry out reading and listening tasks and write texts within the framework of the vocabulary and grammatical structures studied.
