Intensive Care
Who should attend this course?
This course is for nurses working in ITUs or HDUs in the UK. You should be a qualified healthcare professional.
The course may be taken as a standalone module or as part of an under-graduate award e.g., BSc or postgraduate award. e.g., Post Graduate Diploma or MSc.
If you wish to undertake this as part of a postgraduate award normally a degree, or equivalent, is required.
Completion of Assessment - Physiology Based is a co-requisite for this course.
Course content
The aim of the course is to:
- develop and explore knowledge, skills and professional capability in managing the complex needs of the intensive care patient
- evaluate contemporary approaches to practice in intensive care.
In order to implement holistic evidence based care, the course aims to develop professional competence in managing the complex care of a variety of conditions in the intensive care environment.
In order to maximise potential success, you should be able to demonstrate an understanding of relevant underpinning anatomy, physiology and therapeutic interventions for patients requiring acute care.
Drawing on relevant research-based evidence you will explore the applied assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care for a range of key intensive care client groups. You will also explore and debate legal and ethical considerations.
Extensive use will be made of group sessions during which you are expected to actively participation. You will be given guidance and opportunity to engage in academic and professional communication both as part of the learning and assessment processes.

Assessment
The assessment consists of a written assignment and a clinical assessment document which is completed in practice.
