Integrating research with professional practice

Who should attend this course?

This Integrating research with professional practice course is designed for all registered and practicing nurses or midwives and related health and social care professionals who hold a first degree.

Course content

In this Integrating research with professional practice course you will examine ways of generating and acquiring knowledge and understanding about the real world through research. Ethical considerations will be reviewed and placed within a historical context.

You will consider how to develop a research/audit tool, and methods of standardising direct measurement techniques.

You will also critically examine a range of ways of collecting data and examine some common methods of analysis. Links with practice will be explicit throughout the course.

The emphasis in this course will be on the use and relevance of research skills in assessing, developing and evaluating practice. A variety of secondary sources of quantitative and qualitative information will be examined in the context of evidence based practice.

You will be able to:

  • Critically analyse a wide range of research and practice based evidence.
  • Systematically evaluate common data collection methods and data management techniques in practice with reference to the research methods literature.
  • Suggest ways that research skills may be used to enhance and/or improve practice.
