Independent work based skills 1 and 2

Who should attend this course?

These Independent work based skills 1 and 2 courses are designed for health professionals who want to gain specific skills for the competent performance of a prescribed area of clinical practice.

A clinical placement in the area appropriate to your practice is required in order to take this course.

The courses can be taken as a ‘stand alone’ or used towards a postgraduate qualification.

You should be a qualified health professional.

If you wish to undertake this as part of a postgraduate award, normally a degree or equivalent is required.

Course content

The aims of these courses are to enable you to:

  • Undertake an area of study of your own choice, which will inform and be of benefit to developing your professional practice
  • Gain clinical and evaluative skills for the competent performance of a prescribed area of clinical practice relevant to service needs.

These courses enable you to develop skills in a particular area of practice as identified by the individual and line manager where relevant.

The area of skills development will be of benefit to developing your chosen area of professional practice.

The choice of topic and learning outcomes will be the subject of negotiation between you and your supervisor.

These courses can be studied together with the following courses:

  • Independent professional study 1 or 2
  • Independent reflection in professional practice 1 or 2

How does this course map the NHS KSF?

These courses contribute to the development of knowledge and understanding for KSF:

  • Core dimensions 1, 2, 4 and 5

Additional dimensions will be identified you depending on your chosen topic and will be highlighted in the proposed course of study.

Assessment

The nature of the assessment and the number of elements are dependent upon the topic under study and the learning outcomes identified for the proposed study.

You are expected to negotiate the assessment of the course in conjunction with your supervisors.

  • Plus £100 a week for clinical placement if undertaken outside of the student’s place of work
