More about the course

Fine Art at the University of Hertfordshire is concerned with contemporary approaches whilst ensuring that you have a clear understanding of past traditions. Our aim is to nurture and develop confident, self-motivated and resourceful fine art practitioners with a professional outlook and clear understanding of the context and field they are working in. You are actively encouraged to explore either new and traditional media or a combination of these such as painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing, video, installation, photography or digital media. There is a lively and diverse lecture programme where invited visual artists, poets, art critics and curators explain their practice to the whole student group, encouraging debate and exciting discussion. This is continued and examined in depth in the Critical and Cultural Studies element which is intended to integrate theory with practice.

There is not a 'house style', rather we look to foster your inherent abilities and interests to form the core part of your development. Our aim is to support and educate within a creative environment that offers students the opportunity to experiment, develop and finally locate your practice in a focused manner. Past students have spoken to us of how much the course has changed and developed them. Our staff team is drawn from nationally and internationally recognised artists who bring their research and professional interests directly into the student environment.

Work placement

We encourage students to actively seek and take opportunities to place their practice in live contexts outside of the faculty.

Careers

Our graduates move on to individual practice in fine art painting and print making, commissions, small business, community based arts, arts administration and education. The kind of thinking and experimentation of fine art has been valued by employers as bringing creativity to a variety of workplaces and projects.

Teaching methods

Fine art students learn through a combination of studio practice, visual and written and research. Students are taught through individual tutorials and group seminars where work is discussed in detail. There are taught media workshops in each of the media areas of drawing, painting, digital imaging, photography, printmaking, video and sculpture. There is a stimulating lecture programme presenting a minimum of one lecture a week from in house and guest lecturers.
