More about the course

The first year provides you with a firm foundation in general business and finance agendas including economics, accounting, quantitative methods and law. The second year continues with these themes, adding employability and entrepreneurship to the agenda. The modules in your first two years are all compulsory. The final year is focused almost exclusively in the area of finance with a number of optional subjects that complement the core area. Throughout the programme you will develop the capacity for independent learning and the necessary skills both for study and later employment, which include presentation skills, group working skills and effective use of the World Wide Web for academic and finance related purposes.

All students have the option of completing a 12-month work placement between the second and final years, or combining a period of study abroad at a partner university with a 6-month work placement.

I wasn't aware of the different areas within finance until I started University. My course opened many opportunities for me in the working world I didn't know existed, this helped me identify what particular area of finance I wanted to go into.

Work placement

In past years students have completed placements with:

  • KPMG
  • PricewaterhouseCoopers
  • Clark & Co Accountants
  • Lloyds TSB

Careers

This programme is designed to provide a firm foundation for a career in the general field of finance and is particularly appropriate for those who wish to work as financial intermediaries working with organisations such as banks, stockbrokers, investment houses, pension and insurance companies. However, you may also move into functional and general management roles, and the programme well equips you for this by providing you with sound evaluation and analytical skills.

Teaching methods

Alongside traditional teaching methods of lectures, seminars and tutorials, the University operates a web-based student support system called StudyNet where you can expect to find a range of material and communications about every module.

The teaching method for most modules on the course is a one hour weekly lecture followed by a one hour seminar. Typically, a new topic will be introduced in each lecture. The seminars provide an opportunity to discuss and obtain feedback on the topic introduced in the previous week's lecture. Usually, assessment is split between coursework and examination. Coursework may take a variety of forms and could be individual or group work.
