National Scholarship Programme

What is the National Scholarship Programme?

The National Scholarship Programme is a Government initiative to help with the costs associated with going to University.

Approximately 250 scholarships will be awarded in 2012/13. There will be no cap on the number of awards for eligible applicants.

How much is the Scholarship worth?

The total value of each scholarship is £6,000.

The scholarship will be awarded over 3 years.

First Year - value £3,000

  • £1,000 tuition fee waiver
  • £1,000 voucher towards University accommodation or a laptop (3 years full warranty), software and printer
  • Fresher's pass and/or clubs and society membership up to the value of £100
  • £100 book voucher
  • Access to a final year mentor (value £300)
  • £500 voucher to support subsistence e.g. travel expenses

Second and Final Year - value £1,500 per year

  • £500 cash contribution towards living costs
  • £500 voucher to support subsistence e.g. travel expenses
  • £200 book voucher
  • Access to a final year mentor (value £300)

During your studies, you'll need to maintain a 2.1 average to continue receiving the scholarship.

The scholarship will not be awarded during a placement year.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for the National Scholarship Programme at the University of Hertfordshire you must:

  • live in an area with a low level of progression to university and have a household income of £25,000 or less. Use our online tool to check your postcode
  • or be in receipt of incapacity benefit
  • or identified as a 'Looked After Child' (Using the statutory definition)

    Under the Children Act 1989, a child is looked after by a local authority if he or she is provided with accommodation, for a continuous period of more than 24 hours, [Children Act 1989 Section 20 and 21], or is subject to a care order [Children Act 1989 Part IV].

You will not be eligible for the National Scholarship Programme if:

  • you are applying for a course that is NHS funded or TDA funded
  • you are continuing from one University of Hertfordshire (H36) course to another, for example, progressing from a Foundation Degree or Extended Degree
  • you are transferring to the University of Hertfordshire from another University or Higher Education institution
  • you are applying for a postgraduate course
  • you are a looking to study part-time at less than 25 per cent intensity of the full-time equivalent
  • you have your course fees paid or part-paid through a sponsorship arrangement
  • you are an ELQ student

Can I receive a Diamond Scholarship and the National Scholarship Programme in the same year?

Yes

Do I need to apply for the scholarship?

No, there is not a separate application process for this scholarship. Just apply to the University of Hertfordshire course/courses of your choice as usual through UCAS.

So we can check your eligibility, you will need to apply for student finance in the normal way. From the information supplied to Student Finance England we will automatically determine whether you are entitled to the National Scholarship Programme. If you are entitled to an award we will contact you in due course.
