Who should attend this course?
This Empowering midwives in normal birth course is suitable for registered midwives who have regular access to a relevant practice environment/client group.
The course can be taken as a stand-alone course or as part of a postgraduate award.
Course content
The aim of the course is to empower midwives to promote normal birth and regain skills of normal midwifery.
This course gives you the knowledge and understanding to review and analyse the leadership skills required to challenge barriers to normal midwifery practice. In addition, you will be shown how to analyse current evidence and use this to support midwives to regain, develop and enhance practice.
Examples of the topics it covers are:
- Promoting normal birth through antenatal education
- Alternative birth positions
- Use of water in labour and birth
- Managing pain without the use of analgesia
- Common homeopathic and herbal remedies
- Monitoring foetal well-being without the use of Cardiotocograph
- Barriers to normal birth, evidence based versus intuitive knowledge.
The course uses a variety of learning and teaching approaches including lectures, workshop and student led presentations.

Assessment
The assessment consists of a presentation and a written critical review essay.
