About the course

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • A range of vocabulary and structures related to the topics studied
  • Aspects of the culture and lifestyle of the people of the target language country;
  • Appropriate application of language skills; Strategies to evaluate progress and develop language skills.

Why choose this course?

The Programme is offered full-time (3 years) and part-time (normally 6 years) and in all cases leads to the award of a BA degree with Honours. Students completing the programme of modules detailed in the Programme Specification will gain a BA (Hons) in Education Studies and Modern Foreign Languages.

Entry requirements...

The normal entry requirements for the programme are 280 points from a minimum of 2 GCE/VCE A levels or one VCE double award or appropriate qualifications plus GCSE minimum grade of C in English or equivalent.

Students wishing to follow pathways in Modern Foreign Languages must meet the entry requirements for these modules:

MFL Advanced - A level,

MFL intermediate - GSCE grade C, no prior knowledge of target language is required for French beginner modules.

Careers

On graduation a number of different pathways will be open to you. You may choose to work in the field of education administration and management in the local authority sector, or in other public sector organisation such as the police, health work or the prison service, or in a similar role in the private sector. You may decide to continue your studies with a Master's degree. Alternatively, if you decide that you want to move into a career in primary school teaching, you could consider a PGCE qualification following your degree, and enter teaching with the advantage of a strong theoretical background.

Year 1

Core Modules

  • Personal and Professional Development

    This module will enable students to explore and expand their understanding of the range of ways in which people learn and to reflect on their own learning in order to develop effective approaches to their study. Students will consider academic and study skills and develop an action plan for personal development. The module will encourage students to identify strengths and areas for development and to consider how their learning might further their own professional development. Students will develop their occupational awareness to enable them to compete more effectively in the employment market. They will enhance their own employability through researching possible career options and constructing an effective CV.

  • Philosophies that Shape Education

    Students will be introduced to the nature of philosophical inquiry and to the philosophy of education. They will explore the work of some key educational theorists. Students will analyse the arguments in some key educational ideologies and explore the assumptions on which these are based. This module will enable students to make links between theory, policy and practice and to reflect on the nature of their own educational experiences in the light of this.

  • Supplementary French

    This module will enable students to develop their fluency, in speech and in writing in a second foreign language building on work done in 1HUM0175 and 1HUM0172. Students will learn through a range of strategies and materials, and develop the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Furthermore students will enhance their grasp of contemporary French issues and their knowledge of contemporary French society and the French speaking world.

Optional

  • French Advanced C1A

    Emphasis will be placed on ensuring that students have a grammatically sound command of both the written and the spoken forms of French. A thematic approach to language learning will be used, improving the student’s linguistic ability and knowledge of more complex French. The course will be based on selected, complex carefully graded texts, online and audiovisual materials compiled from a variety of sources made available to students through StudyNet. Typical themes of study will focus on social, economic and cultural issues. Student will be expected to take part in discussions on the various topics studied.

  • French Advanced C1B

    Emphasis will continue to be placed on ensuring that students have a grammatically sound command of both the written and the spoken forms of French. A thematic approach to language learning will be used, improving the student's linguistic ability and knowledge of more complex French. The module will be based on selected, more complex carefully graded texts and materials compiled from a variety of sources made available to students through Studynet. Students will participate in discussions on a variety of topics focusing on cultural issues, tourism and the world of work

  • French Beginners A1A

    This module will enable students to communicate in French at a basic level in a range of everyday social situations. Students will learn to talk about themselves and their daily life, carry out reading and listening tasks and write short texts within the framework of the vocabulary and grammatical structures studied. The module will be course book based, supplemented by on-line materials including for example video clips, blogs and magazine websites.

  • French Beginners A1B

    This module will enable students to communicate further in French at a basic level in a range of everyday social situations. Students will learn to talk about past and forthcoming events, carry out reading and listening tasks and write short texts within the framework of the vocabulary and grammatical structures studied. The module will be course book based, supplemented by on-line materials including for example video clips, blogs and magazine websites.

  • French Intermediate B1A

    This module broadens and consolidates the students’ competence in French. Students will learn to talk about student life and travel, carry out reading and listening tasks and write texts within the framework of the vocabulary and grammatical structures studied. The module will be largely course book based, supplemented by on-line materials including, for example, video clips, blogs and magazine websites.

  • French Intermediate B1B

    This module will extend the students’ competence in French through the introduction of more advanced language structures. Students will learn to discuss work and future plans, studying and living abroad. They will carry out reading and listening tasks and write texts within the framework of the vocabulary and grammatical structures studied. The module will be largely course book based, supplemented by on-line materials including for example on-line TV news items, blogs and magazine websites.
