Philosophy

Joint Honours / Combined Honours

The subject

Philosophy addresses central questions about what we know and how we know it, the values we live by, and how we reason. Philosophers ask:

  • What makes a right action right?
  • Why should we obey the law of the land?
  • How can we tell good arguments from spin?
  • What distinguishes a good scientific theory or a good work of art?

Most of our students have not studied philosophy before, and it does not matter which subjects you want to study or have existing experience of.

Our philosophy teaching achieved the highest possible grade in the most recent Quality Assurance Agency review, and consistently scores highly on the National Student Survey.

In addition to our formal teaching we have a student-run philosophy society and an optional annual residential weekend.

Careers

Philosophy graduates are valuable to employers because philosophy trains you to express your own thoughts and criticise those of others clearly and systematically.

You will learn how to analyse arguments, think your way through difficult and unfamiliar problems, and present your ideas in a logical order. These skills are useful in every graduate job and become more important as your career advances.
