The subject
Our course is renowned for teaching relevant maths in understandable ways and our approachable academic staff are highly rated in research.
A maths education is highly respected and it is a vital practical skill if you wish to shape the future of our society. Many areas rely on the insight maths provides, such as:
- advances in computing
- decision-making
- medicine
- pollution control
- product design
- space travel
- telecoms
- weather forecasting
Our teaching staff have worked for major organisations like Rolls-Royce, British Aerospace, British Gas, the Fisheries Research Agency, the US Department of Defence and the European Space Operations Centre.
They have predicted fish populations in the North Sea to aid conservation, constructed software for the Ariane space rocket to minimise fuel consumption, and maximised yields from underground gas fields.
Careers
There is a national shortage of mathematicians and, on graduating, you will have opportunities in:

- commerce
- research establishments
- financial institutions
- local government
- the civil service and teaching
Students taking the Major route will be eligible for membership of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications.
