Journalism and Media Cultures

Joint Honours

The subject

This course gives you a flavour of the skills associated with print journalism, as well as deepening your understanding of the media as a social institution.

In the First Year, you will examine the legal and ethical dilemmas linked to journalism, write your first articles and examine the portrayal of race, class and gender in the media.

In the Second Year, you will hone your writing skills, find your own stories, create a magazine and learn basic design principles. Many students also apply for work experience (in their own time) in fields such as newspapers, magazines, websites and PR.

After the Second Year, you can take an optional year's study abroad, or a year's work experience.

Then, in your Final Year, you will focus on the relationship between politics and journalism, put together a portfolio and examine areas like music and the media, celebrity culture, international media and the media's relationship with society.

Careers

On graduation, you will be able to undertake further qualifications or work in the competitive media-related industries.
