Joint Honours

The subject

European Studies considers the development of Europe and the European Union taking an interdisciplinary approach.

It explores historical, geographical, political, and economic perspectives, but it also includes a contemporary business agenda, looking at marketing, human resource and financial aspects, as well as examining Europe’s place within the world.

The subject also addresses cultural, legal and policy areas, for example, looking at environmental concerns and tourism impacts.

In the First Year, you will study; History of the European Idea and European Space and Society, which set the historical and geographical context.

In the Second Year, you will study; Issues in European Integration and Issues in European Economics, giving you further insight into the political and economic dimensions of Europe. In addition, you can elect to take a business strand or you can explore cultural, historical and policy perspectives.

You can elect to include a placement year, which we highly recommend. This will enable you to study at one of our many Erasmus partner universities in Europe, and possibly to combine a semester of study with a work placement at a company or organisation in another European country.

In the Final Year, you will study; Europe: Nations and Nationalism and Europe in the World. You can again elect to take further business modules and you have the opportunity, through a project, to explore an area of interest to you with a European focus.

Careers

European Studies will prepare you for a range of careers, be it in a European or supranational institution, a multinational business, or perhaps a UK based company, for which Europe is a major market.

Study of a language will certainly open up career opportunities, and the international experience of studying or working in another country will give you a competitive edge in the job market.
