The subject

This course looks at how the English language works, how we use it to communicate, how we acquire it in the first place, and how it varies according to social factors.

In years one and two, you will take some specified modules, which provide a 'toolkit' for further study.

In the third year, you may undertake to write an independent dissertation pursuing your individual interests.

English Language and Communication combines well with many subjects from Psychology to Journalism and English Language Teaching.

Careers

Depending on what you have studied with English Language and Communication with, you may take a variety of different careers routes, these may include:

  • language therapy
  • lexicography (working on dictionaries)
  • TEFL and other forms of teaching (mainstream, working with bilingual children, special needs teaching)

In addition, skills gained through the study of English Language and Communication are particularly useful for careers in:

  • publishing and printing
  • information technology and management services
  • journalism
  • administration in the public sector
  • public relations
  • social and pastoral care
  • library and information management

Entry grades:
260 UCAS points. If English is not your first language, you will need an IELTS score of 6.5, TOEFL 580 (237 CBT or 92 IBT). Equivalent qualifications welcomed.
