Who should attend this course?

This Complex social issues in maternity care course is specifically designed for registered midwives who have regular access to a relevant practice environment / client group.

The course can be taken as a stand-alone course or as part of a postgraduate award.

Course content

This course aims to facilitate midwives to adapt their knowledge and skills to enable collaborative multidisciplinary working and the integration of relevant services to support women with complex social factors.

The topics that the course covers include:

  • those who misuse substances
  • recent migrants – asylum seeker/refugee
  • those under 20 years of age
  • victims of domestic abuse
  • those with mental health issues
  • those isolated from society e.g. by imprisonment
  • poverty and homelessness
  • mental health disorders
  • communication

The assessment is based on coursework only which includes a presentation (30%), a critical analysis (40%) and a reflective account (30%).
