Chemotherapy: Principles to underpin practice
Who should attend this course?
This module is intended for UK and international healthcare professionals who wish to develop their knowledge and understanding of the theories and practices that underpin the delivery of chemotherapy (SACT) to cancer and non cancer patients. It has been specifically designed for individuals who work or plan to administer chemotherapy according to the guidelines set in the Manual for Cancer Services (UK). The module may be taken as a stand alone module or as part of a post graduate award. e.g. Post Graduate Diploma or Master’s Degree
Course content:
The content is divided into four key themes:
1. Understanding how SACT (systemic anti cancer treatments) work.
2. Patient needs; which includes critical appraisal of information to be given in pre treatment consultations, discussions developed from patient concerns which enable them to consent to care.
3. Management and prevention of symptoms that result from chemotherapy treatment.
4. The ethical dilemmas and decision making that arises from using chemotherapy to treat disease, the paradoxical position nurses are placed in when administering chemotherapy. Survivorship and aftercare issues to include how people adapt once treatment has been completed
