Ceramics

Why choose this course?

This course is ideal for people who would like to learn ceramic techniques, from the design and conception of a piece of ceramic work to the nuts and bolts of how to make it, the different techniques available to you and why you would choose one method over another to achieve the desired result. You will also learn about the pottery workshop, what equipment you need and how to use it, essential health and safety and how to set up your own facilities in a shed, garage, workshop or spare room.

Each week you will learn about types of clay and a different process of making such as:

  • coiling and extruding – building shapes from hand-rolled ‘snakes’ of clay
  • slab-building – building shapes from rolled out ‘slabs’ of clay
  • pinching – using hands to shape clay
  • throwing – using a pottery wheel to ‘raise’ a shape*
  • styles of surface decoration - from slips, underglazes to texture and glaze application techniques.

Work will be fired and you will be able to learn about the firing process. You will be able to create your own finished pieces using the any of the above techniques and the tutor will ensure that you know how to work safely in a workshop environment.

By the end of the course you will have a range of ceramic pieces of your own design and enough knowledge of how to make pottery independently if you wish to continue beyond the basic techniques.

*Throwing tuition is limited to two half hour sessions, for beginners, each term to allow tuition on other processes over the course (Saturday course only).
