Who should attend this course?

This Care and assessment of the acutely ill child course is designed for qualified healthcare professionals working in a range of clinical settings that deal with children and young people.

The course may be taken as a standalone module or as part of a post graduate award, e.g. Post Graduate Diploma or Master’s Degree.

Course content

In response to the dynamic challenges in practice, the course has been developed to provide practitioners with the knowledge and skills to undertake effective assessment of the acutely ill child and devise appropriate care packages and management plans.

It aims to develop professional competence in managing the care of the acutely ill children and young people through simulation, practical skills workshops, lectures and group discussion.

The topics covered include:

  • Revision of altered anatomy and physiology in the acutely ill child
  • Skills workshops
  • Planning care
  • Assessment of acute care issues – respiratory conditions
  • Neurological conditions pain, shock, acid/base balance
  • ECG and arterial blood gas workshops
  • Scenarios considering the assessment and management of acute conditions

Assessment

Assessment will include the submission of a clinical assessment portfolio alongside a written piece considering a case study identified from practice.
