Cancer Care

Who should attend this course

This Cancer care course is intended for UK and international healthcare professionals who wish to develop their knowledge and understanding of the theories and practices that underpin cancer care. It has been specifically designed for individuals who work or plan to work with patients who have cancer.

The course can be taken as a stand alone module or as part of a post graduate award. e.g. Post Graduate Diploma or Master’s Degree.

You should be a qualified healthcare professional. If you wish to undertake this as part of a postgraduate award normally a degree, or equivalent, is required.

Course content

The course aims to:

  • develop an understanding of cancer, the causes, the treatments, the information and care required by those experiencing cancer
  • critically review the local and national policies, guidelines and directives that underpin and impact on the treatment and delivery of cancer care

The course content includes theories of cancer development, the physiological changes at a cellular level, the impact this has on the person with cancer and in society in terms of psychological and social significance.

You will consider the factors that promote cancer be they environmental, viral or from a genetic predisposition and considers how lifestyle can influence the disease.  You will also consider the various treatments used against cancer and the care of symptoms that arise from these treatments.

The impact that government policy has in regard to health promotion, and the management of cancer will be discussed.

Extensive use will be made of group sessions during which active participation will be expected.  You will be given guidance and opportunity to engage in academic and professional communication both as part of the learning and assessment processes.

Assessment

The assessment consists of 2,500 word case study, a presentation and completion of competencies.
