Autistic Spectrum Conditions

Who should attend this course?

This Autistic spectrum conditions course is for learning disability/mental health and social care practitioners who support people with autistic spectrum disorders.

To apply for Level 6 study you must hold a minimum of a Diploma of Higher Education or equivalent. To apply for Level 7 study you must hold a minimum of a first Degree or equivalent.

The course can be taken as a stand-alone course or you can use the credits towards a BSc/MSc course at the University.

Please indicate clearly your intended level of study on application.

Course content

The aim of the Autistic spectrum conditions course is to:

  • To increase the knowledge and skills of those practitioners supporting and assisting service users with autistic spectrum disorders.
  • To critically evaluate approaches to practice and service provision.

The course covers the following topics:

  • the autistic spectrum  - the nature and prevalence of “classic” autism, Asperger syndrome and pervasive developmental disorder
  • causation and triad of impairment - characteristics and the spectrum discriminating features
  • diagnostic criteria and assessment
  • presenting difficulties e.g., theory of mind
  • behaviours that challenge and bullying
  • mental health issues and autism
  • the autism Act 2009 and implications for practice
