Assessment of the mental health needs of people who have learning disabilities

Who should attend this course?

This Assessment of the mental needs of people who have learning disabilities course is for registered nurses and health-care professionals supporting Learning Disabled service-users in practice.

To apply for Level 6 study you must hold a minimum of a Diploma of Higher Education or equivalent. To apply for Level 7 study you must hold a minimum of a first Degree or equivalent. The course can be taken as a stand-alone course or you can use the credits towards a BSc/MSc course at the University.

Course content

The aims of the course are to:

  • develop an increased awareness and understanding of the key issues underpinning the complexities of accurate mental health assessment of people who have learning disabilities
  • enhance the effective treatment and improve the service experience for people who have both learning disabilities and additional mental health problems

The course is designed to enhance the care delivery of healthcare practitioners in supporting the mental health needs of people who have learning disabilities being treated within specialist learning disability or mainstream mental health services.

It is based around five broad themes in relation to mental health and assessment:

  • Epidemiology and Psychopathology
  • Challenges of Diagnosis
  • Assessment Tools and Methods
  • Therapeutic Interventions
  • Socio-political Context
