Applications of ultrasound science
Who should attend this course?
This Applications of ultrasound science course is designed for radiographers and health care professionals who are interested in the application of the scientific principles of diagnostic ultrasound imaging and the safe practice of diagnostic ultrasound.
The course can be taken in combination with other ultrasound related courses and is part of the MSc Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences Ultrasound Programme.
Course content
This course is designed to give you an understanding of the scientific principles related to the production of an ultrasound image while developing independent, creative thinkers, theories and practice.
The course encourages you to take independent study, both as an addition and a combination of what you learn. This broadens your knowledge and understanding of the subject. Active participation in group activities is a requirement for all participants.
The aims of this course are to enable students to:
- Apply scientific principles underpinning diagnostic ultrasound imaging to the safe clinical practice of diagnostic ultrasound
- Have knowledge and understanding of system controls and their underlying physical principles
- Have understanding of the range of scanning equipment and ancillary equipment currently available in order to justify and critically evaluate its use in medical ultrasound examinations
- Have critical awareness of the possible bio effects and safety measures encountered in medical ultrasound utilising the information and knowledge to practice in a safe and competent manner
- Critically evaluate the principles governing safe practice in diagnostic ultrasound imaging
- Recognise the production of image artefacts in medical ultrasound and be able to apply this knowledge in the clinical setting
