About the course

  • This programme offers opportunity to develop or extend expertise in established and developing areas of Western medical acupuncture.
  • You will study the physiology and pathophysiology of acupuncture and explore related research, clinical and professional issues according to your interests and professional background.
  • There is an emphasis on developing your own acupuncture practice through a variety of means and of demonstrating this in your coursework for the programme.
  • The programme leads to the award of an MSc Western Medical Acupuncture with interim awards of Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma in Western Medical Acupuncture
  • It fulfils the inter-professional learning agenda by providing professional development for a wide range of clinicians including; GPs, hospital doctors, medical students, physiotherapists, nurses, osteopaths, chiropracters, dentists and podiatrists.

Entry requirements

  • Registration with a relevant professional body allied to medicine or health.
  • Normally a first degree, in a related discipline. Applicants with evidence of equivalent professional development or academic proficiency will be considered.
  • Evidence of completion of a recognised course in Western medical acupuncture (the BMAS Foundation Course or equivalent course). Students trained in traditional acupuncture techniques will also be considered.
  • Employment in, or access to, and appropriate area of practice whilst enrolled on the programme.
  • The English language requirement for this programme is, IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 580 or equivalent1.
  • The appropriate visa status to study in the UK


If you already have a BMAS Diploma in Medical Acupuncture qualification you will be given credit and will not have to complete all of the modules.

You may be able to transfer existing credits from other Universities into this programme and should contact Marion Richardson when applying.
