About the course
- This programme has been designed to meet the needs of health and social care professionals and medical staff with a significant interest in mental health.
- You will have access to a range of modules specifically related to mental health interventions, psycho-pharmacology, recovery and social inclusion, specialist mental health service delivery, research and professional issues according to your interests and professional background.
- It has an emphasis on developing skills and competence in psychiatric and mental health practice to meet continuing professional development requirements and enhance interprofessional learning and working.
- The programme leads to the award of an MSc in Psychiatric Practice or MSc in Mental Health Practice with interim awards of Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma.
- It fulfils the interprofessional learning agenda reflecting the varied roles and functions adopted by mental health practitioners and includes professional development for a wide range of other clinicians with a specialist interest including; GPs, GP registrars, nurse specialists and practice nurses.
Entry requirements
MSc in Psychiatric Practice
The normal entry requirements for all students for this programme are:
- Registration with a relevant UK professional body
- Two years full time (or equivalent) experience within a relevant field
- Employment in, or access to, an appropriate area of psychiatric practice whilst enrolled on the programme
The programme is subject to the University's Principles, Policies, Regulations and Procedures for the Admission of Students to Undergraduate and Taught Postgraduate Programmes and will take account of University policy and guidelines for assessing accredited prior learning (APL) and accredited prior experiential learning (APEL).
MSc in Mental Health Practice
The normal entry requirements for all students for this programme are:
- Registration with the appropriate professional body
- Normally a first degree in a related discipline. Applicants with evidence of equivalent professional development or academic proficiency will be considered
- Two years full time (or equivalent) experience within a relevant field
- Employment in, or access to, an appropriate area of mental health practice whilst enrolled on the programme
- International students must have an IELTS rating of 6.5 or above in order to meet University English language ability requirements

Due to the specialist nature of this programme you will be required to discuss your programme of study with the Programme Leader prior to completing your application form so that your eligibility for a particular module can be assessed.
If you already have a postgraduate Psychiatric / Mental Health qualification you may be able to transfer existing credits into this programme and should contact Jackie Knight when applying.

All students from non-majority English speaking countries require proof of English language proficiency. The following qualifications and grades will be considered
- GCSE English language grade A-C
- IELTS 6.0 (with no less than 5.5 in any band)
