More about the course
Human Biology
This course gives you a detailed knowledge of the biology of human beings. Human Biology is a study of the biological aspects of human activities. The modules provide detailed knowledge of the biology of human beings both in health and disease, together with an introduction to the relevant studies in cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics.
Journalism & Media Cultures
This course gives you a range of journalistic skills, and hands-on experience of producing work in a variety of styles, for different markets as well as gaining an understanding of how communication works, and the history and nature of the British media.
Topics will include different theories about how communication takes place and lectures will cover some of the key debates that have occupied the analysis of media communication in recent decades.
You will examine how the current form of media institutions came into being and consider their likely future structure. You will debate the quality of the media, the nature and influence of new media technologies, and consider national and international media.
This joint field consists of the study of two separate subjects: Journalism and Media Cultures. You will study both in the first year. In the second and third years you will have the choice to continue with this study mode or keep only one subject provided that your other field is offered as a major. The only current exception is Heath Studies. The Journalism & Media cultures field is not offered as a major route.
Work placement
You may, subject to guidance and approval, undertake an additional study year between your second and final years by spending a year at an approved university in North America, Europe, Australia or Singapore. During this year you undertake a programme of taught modules and/or project work, which will complement your studies on the Joint Honours Programme.
If you spend this year abroad in one of the EU countries you will need to be reasonably proficient in the appropriate foreign language and it may be necessary to study the language of your chosen country during your first and second years. It may also be possible, depending on your subject combinations, to take a year out working in industry.

This programme gives you flexibility in your studies at university resulting in flexibility in your choice of career at the end of your course. You will acquire a much broader base of knowledge and experience that could really widen your employment opportunities.
