More about the course
Health Studies
During your study you will have the opportunity to develop your knowledge and understanding of the operational, social, legal and economic contexts of the health services and care practices. You will encounter a stimulating and balanced range of topics about different health issues, national and international contexts, and a variety of approaches to health care practice.
First year study will include an introduction to Healthcare and the Social Sciences together with Inter-Professional Practice. These provide the foundation for second year study including evidence based research, counselling skills, studies in social policy and legal and ethical issues together with systematic family interventions. Your course will then culminate with further extensive study employing research methods and leadership skills for practice.
Future potential opportunities for successful graduates may include the NHS postgraduate training scheme as well as a wide range of health related fields and health services.
From the second year this field is currently only offered as a Joint or Minor route. The availability of a Major route is dependent on numbers. If you combine Health Studies with Languages or Journalism & Media Cultures, you will be studying both fields as a joint mode.
French
This subject places it’s emphasis on the contemporary spoken language and the countries in which they are spoken, allow you to develop language skills alongside other disciplines. We offer French at beginners, intermediate and advanced levels.
After combining your Language studies with either European Studies or English Language and Communication in year one, you will have the choice to keep the same pattern in year 2 and 3 or to make your language a minor subject (without European Studies / English Language and Communication). Please note that the language element of your studies can only represent 25% of your degree.
Studying a language throughout your degree will prepare you to use it for professional and social purposes in your career. After the second year we encourage students to study for a year in Europe including France and Spain or in Northern America including the French speaking province of Québec in Canada, Mexico, the USA, Australia etc.
