Physics, Astronomy and Mathematics courses

Read our booklet to find out more about the range of undergraduate courses we offer at the School of Physics, Astronomy and Mathematics.

Physics

Terrestrial planet orbiting starPhysics challenges our imaginations with topics like relativity and quantum mechanics, and it leads to great discoveries, like computers and lasers, that change our lives.

Study the universe from the largest galaxies to the smallest subatomic particles. Learn about many other sciences, including chemistry, oceanography, seismology, and astronomy.

Undergraduate Physics courses

Postgraduate Physics study

PhD and MSc by Research available for those wishing to pursue postgraduate study.

Your future career

  • Work in industrial and government laboratories, on university campuses, in astronautics or as an engineer
  • Be a specialist for newspapers and magazines
  • Work in government or the financial sector - your problem-solving abilities and analytical skills will be a great asset

Astrophysics courses

Students playing frisbeeAstrophysics deals with the physics of the universe and applies many disciplines of physics, including mechanics, electromagnetism, statistical mechanics, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, relativity, nuclear and particle physics, and atomic and molecular physics.

Undergraduate Astrophysics courses

Postgraduate Astrophysics courses

Postgraduate study in Astrophysics is available in our Centre for Astrophysics Research (CAR) - read more and apply.

Your future career

  • Conduct research and test scientific instruments and software
  • Teach to educate the public and other professionals
  • Work in sectors requiring mathematical/analytical ability such as industry or the financial sector

Mathematics courses

Spider's web flareMathematics is used throughout the world in many fields, including natural science, engineering, medicine, and the social sciences. Advanced mathematics is widely used, but often in an unseen and unadvertised way for example:

  • Calculating Voyager's journey to far-away planets
  • In ecology for the laws of population change
  • Statistics is essential in medicine
  • Pricing derivatives and other financial instruments

Undergraduate Maths courses

Postgraduate Maths courses

PhD and MSc by Research available for those wishing to pursue postgraduate study in Mathematics.

Your future career

Qualify in mathematics and you could work in finance, statistics, engineering, computers, teaching or accountancy where you can:

  • use logical thought
  • formulate a problem in a way which allows for computation and decision
  • make deductions from assumption
  • use advanced concepts
