Bayfordbury observatory21st Century Resources

High-specification facilities support teaching, learning and research both on and off campus.

  • New undergraduate physics laboratory with dark room facilities and space for project work.
  • Our Bayfordbury observatory has 8 fully automated optical telescopes, a 5-metre radio telescope and a 3-dish radio interferometer, all dedicated to undergraduate teaching.
  • Bayfordbury also hosts our atmospheric physics station comprising a LIDAR system, Solar polarimeters, a Solar photometer and a colour all-sky camera.
  • The School hosts the Science Learning Centre East of England at this site. Equipped with laboratories, a TV studio, lecture theatre and a planetarium, the centre is regularly used by students, as well as for educational visits and to run courses for teachers and technicians.
  • Nettle StemOn the College Lane campus world-class facilities help students to progress their learning and present coursework professionally. These include the University’s technology-rich, 24/7 Learning Resources Centres and groundbreaking e-learning environment studynet, plus private study areas and 10 well-equipped computer suites.
  • The Schools of Physics, Astronomy Mathematics, and Engineering and Technology, jointly operate a Scanning Electron Microscope which is available for consultancy work for other University of Hertfordshire Schools.

Physics lecturers and researchers within the School are members of the Centre for Atmospheric and Instrumentation Research (CAIR) which has strengths in light scattering, instrumentation and atmospheric physics.
