About the Psychology, Sport and Geography department

The Department of Psychology, Sport and Geography has built an excellent reputation both for its teaching and innovative research. By investing in people at the top of their subjects we've created an exceptional and richly resourced environment for learning.

Across all our subject areas our partners from commerce, industry and the public sector access this specialist knowledge through short courses, consultancy, applied research and training courses.

Psychology

Our Psychology courses range from the BSc (Hons) Psychology degree to higher-level specialised degrees in Industrial and Work Psychology and Research in Clinical Psychology and the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. We also offer the Psychology Conversion Masters programme for graduates from other disciplines wishing to switch to a career in Psychology. We hold Accreditation from the British Psychological Society (BPS) for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC).

As a department we have been rated as 'excellent' for our teaching quality and have achieved one of the highest research ratings for a 'new' university.

Research

Psychology at the University of Hertfordshire began in 1972 and is one of the larger university psychology departments in the country. We are proud of our extensive research programme which is recognised internationally for its work in various fields including Health and Clinical Psychology, Cognitive Neuropsychology, Learning, Memory and Thinking, Behavioural change in Organisations and Businesses and Psychology of movement.

Some of our recent partnership work has informed OFCOM on alcohol advertising regulations, changed occupational stress management and aided the identification of deception and fraud.

We are committed to building on this reputation and have created a vibrant research culture supported by excellent research facilities.

Sport

Our Sports courses range from Sports and Exercise Science, Sports Therapy and Sports Studies. Each one of these unique areas covers a specialised area in the study of Sport and has their own dedicated specialist facilities to help our students get the most up to date and practical experience during their degree.

In Sports Science and Sports Therapy our capabilities cover cardiovascular and lactate testing, weight management, sports injuries, sports psychology support and nutrition.

Sports Studies covers areas such as Management, Coaching and Development of Sports in equal measure giving students a broad understanding of the complexities behind the scenes in today's sporting world.

Our Sports graduates have gone onto achieve great success with many students now working with professional sports teams in the UK and abroad as well as Sports councils and teaching. Our National Student Survey results frequently show our sports students to be highly employable and be working in professional or managerial roles shortly after graduating.

Research

Sports at the University of Hertfordshire began in 1999 and we are proud of our research areas in this field. Research areas include: Functional and Performance Nutrition, Biomechanics, Adaptive and Metabolomic Physiology, Sport and Exercise Physiology, Links between physical activity and mental health, and coaching techniques.

Geography

An understanding of the world from social, economic, political and environmental perspectives has never been more critical.

Our geography degrees are aimed at students who want to develop their knowledge of our rapidly changing world by combining elements of physical and human geography.

The environmental management degrees at the University of Hertfordshire are designed to develop your understanding of environmental processes, their measurement, and the techniques used to better manage the inter-relationships between society and the environment.
