Pharmaceutics

The pharmaceutics area in the Department of Pharmacy is a team of academics and researchers with expertise in dosage form design and characterisation, as well as substantial industrial experience.
Pharmaceutics in MPharm
The pharmaceutics of the Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) programme include:
- the physicochemical principles underpinning medicines development
- dosage form design and development
- quality assurance
- clinical and non-clinical testing of medicines.
All levels of the course, teaching is supported by visiting lecturers from pharmaceutical companies and professional bodies such as the MHRA and TOPRA.
The practical aspects of pharmaceutics are carried out in a range of newly built and equipped laboratories, including specialist facilities for solid dosage form and aseptic manufacture, and extensive facilities for product analysis and quality evaluation.
Research
The research interests of the pharmaceutics group are focused on drug delivery to the skin, lungs, other musocal tissues, nanopharmaceutics and toxicology.
Within the pharmaceutics group projects are currently being funded by the:
- Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC)
- Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)
- Medical Research Council (MRC)
- Knowledge Transfer Partnerships schemes
- Health Protection Agency
- numerous pharmaceutical companies
Research also contributes significantly to the MPharm programme via the Research Methods and Research Project modules, which integrates teaching and research and also allows many pharmaceutics project students to complete a project in conjunction with an industrial partner.
