Keith Vaz Lecture
MP visits the University

MP Keith Vaz, chairman of the influential Parliamentary Home Affairs Select Committee, gave the first of what is planned to be a series of lectures by public figures.
Mr Vaz spoke about his first election as Labour MP for Leicester East in 1987 and his ensuing political career including a spell as minister in Tony Blair's government. He was the first Asian elected to the Commons for more than 60 years.
His current role is to lead one of the key backbench committees in scrutinising the government. On the day of his lecture, Home Secretary Teresa May announced the adoption of minimum alcohol pricing – a measure recommended by Mr Vaz’s committee four years ago.
The lecture, in the Law Court Building, was followed by a question and answer session.
