Tasmin Malcolm
Bachelor of Law (LLB)
I have the University of Hertfordshire to thank for helping me to develop the confidence as well as skills that are needed to succeed in life.
I take pride in telling people that my degree is from the University of Hertfordshire.
Having been to another university prior to the University of Hertfordshire, I feel that our Law School definitely prioritises teaching, particularly in comparison with others (the “open door” policy of staff here is fantastic and means that I have never felt alone) whilst the School of Law itself has a great sense of community amongst both students and staff, creating an amazing learning environment.
I have recently accepted a place to undertake the Bar Practice Training Course after completing my LLB and believe that UH has prepared me for my next level of training by creating so many opportunities, not only to maximise my potential academically, but also to increase my employability.
I have met several barristers, solicitors and Judges as a result of events arranged by the School of Law and have a CV full of experience to take forward.
I had the opportunity to be involved in a Mock Trial project coordinated by the University of Hertfordshire which offers training in advocacy. As a direct result of my participation I was able to attend a training exercise for Police Officers in St Albans Crown Court, which provided the opportunity for me to deliver a closing speech in the presence of a jury, a full public gallery, a 'defendant' and a Judge!
In my role as President of the University of Hertfordshire's Student Law Society, I had the pleasure of meeting the Lord Chief Justice, the Right Honourable Lord Judge at our annual lecture and formally thanking him for his speech on the Criminal Justice system.
In addition, I am part of the School's “Streetlaw” team, who give a service to the local community providing information/education on an area of law at their request.
I was responsible for delivering a presentation to children of secondary school age on the legal implications of cyber-bullying.
I also had the pleasure of chairing a lecture delivered by Lord Carlile on the effects of terrorism legislation, and was able to spend some time shadowing alongside His Honour Judge Baker, whom I met at an event organised by the School of Law. This was invaluable experience as, at that time, I was part of the very successful Mooting Team at the School of Law, and was the winner of the 2008/09 internal mooting competition. As such I received training on research skills and Court etiquette.
