Hashi Mohamed
Law with French
In September 2003 I enrolled on a four-year qualifying Joint Honours course at the University of Hertfordshire reading Law with French.
This course had the benefit of qualifying in law, while simultaneously offering a year in Europe to improve my French.
During this time I worked part-time in Sainsbury's and spent a year (2005/2006) in the Universite de Jean Monnet in St-Etienne. I graduated in 2007 with a First in French and an Upper Second Class degree overall. I was also invited to address fellow graduates during the graduation ceremony of November 2007.
Between September 2007 and September 2008, I worked as a broadcast journalist for the BBC; working for programmes such as BBC Newsnight, the Today programme and the News Channel. I was also a member of the award winning team behind the docu-drama '10 Days to War.' This was an invaluable experience which provided an insight into the media world.
In October 2008, on a scholarship from the Princes Charities, I enrolled on a Master's programme reading Modern African Studies at St Antony's College, Oxford. This led me to writing a thesis on human rights abuses in North-Eastern Kenya. This was a remarkable experience which included travelling to a remote part of Africa to conduct extensive research and interviews. Some of my material was subsequently published.
In September 2009 I began the Bar Vocational Course with the aim of qualifying as a Barrister. During this time, I participated and won the Lincoln's Inn Open Moot Competition judged by the Treasurer, Lord Walker of Gestingthorpe. As a result, I also got to spend a day shadowing Lord Walker in the new UK Supreme Court where I had the opportunity to see the inner workings of the highest court in the land.
For two years now I have also mentored in inner city London schools with the aim of raising aspirations and making a difference.
The University of Hertfordshire has helped me in all that I have done so far, and given me a solid grounding in law.
