English Language Teaching

Teaching English is a hugely rewarding career, giving you exciting opportunities to work overseas, learn about other cultures and get to know people from all over the world. Here at Hertfordshire, we explore the different motivations for learning a second language, the role of English in today’s world and the powerful techniques you can use to teach it.

Studying English Language Teaching at Hertfordshire considers the role of teachers, and the 'specification' for a good teacher, drawing on students' own recent and current experience, progressing to theories on the best ways of learning and teaching, and English as an international language.

You can study English Language Teaching as part of a combined undergraduate degree.

You can also continue your studies in this rewarding subject area at postgraduate level. The MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) combines the practical teaching of international students - from small groups to hour-long classes - with professionally focused modules in areas such as:

  • designing syllabuses
  • teaching an international language
  • and developing blended learning tools (like wikis and podcasts)
The course has been intellectually stimulating and challenged me as an educator. I feel much more confident in my knowledge of how individuals learn languages and the theory behind TESOL.
