About English Language & Communication
Welcome to English Language & Communication at the University of Hertfordshire.
We are a friendly, enthusiastic and supportive team and we hope you would like to study with us.
At the University of Hertfordshire we offer a unique mix of modules, focusing on:
- the English language itself
- its sounds, words and structure
- how it has developed
- how it is used to communicate
- how it is learned by children
- when it goes wrong
- how we can teach it as a foreign language.
You can study these as part of a single or combined undergraduate degree.
Our teaching team
Our academics are actively engaged in research in their specialist areas and regularly present at national and international conferences.
We have hosted a wide range of events including:
- Institute of Acoustics Workshop
- Child Language Seminar
- Relevance Theory Workshop
- Linguistics Association of Great Britain
- second international conference of Critical Approaches to Discourse Analysis Across Disciplines (CADAAD)
Throughout your studies, you will receive academic and personal support through seminars and one-to-one tutorials.
You will also attend research seminars to explore different areas of academic interest.

What our students say
Isobelle Clarke, a previous student of English Language and Communication with English Language Teaching, shares her highlights from her time at the University of Hertfordshire and explains how undertaking an EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) allowed her to progress to the University.
A talk by Isobelle Clarke, an English Language & Communication graduate, at the inaugural TEDx conference at University of Hertfordshire in February 2015. The event strives to re-create the unique experience found at TED, an organisation devoted to spreading ideas and promoting open-mindedness, usually through short talks.
