English Language and Communication

Student with booksWelcome to English Language and Communication at the University of Hertfordshire.

We are a friendly, enthusiastic and supportive team and we hope you would like to study with us.

At the University of Hertfordshire we offer a unique mix of modules, focusing on:

  • the English language itself
  • its sounds, words and structure
  • how it has developed
  • how it's used to communicate
  • how it's learned by children
  • when it goes wrong
  • and how we can teach it as a foreign language.

You can study these as part of a single or combined undergraduate degree.

Our teaching team

Our academics are actively engaged in research in their specialist areas and regularly present at national and international conferences.

We have hosted a wide range of events including:

  • Institute of Acoustics Workshop
  • Child Language Seminar
  • Relevance Theory Workshop
  • Linguistics Association of Great Britain
  • second international conference of Critical Approaches to Discourse Analysis Across Disciplines (CADAAD)

Throughout your studies, you'll receive academic and personal support through seminars and one-to-one tutorials.

You will also attend research seminars to explore different areas of academic interest.
