Overview
What is oncology and radiotherapy?

Oncology is the study and practice of treating malignant disease (cancer). One method of treating people with cancer is radiotherapy, a dynamic and ever-changing area of oncology, which utilises ionising radiation at high energies to either cure the patient or improve their quality of life.
What is a therapeutic radiographer?
Therapeutic radiographers are highly-skilled practitioners who plan and administer radiotherapy treatment. By operating a wide range of highly-specialised equipment, the radiographer delivers accurate doses of radiation to the cancer in order to destroy the diseased tissue, while minimising the amount of radiation received by the surrounding healthy tissue.
Our radiotherapy courses prepare your for a career as a therapeutic radiographer where you will have a key role within the multidisciplinary oncology team. You will gain essential skills that:
- combine a high degree of technical expertise with the ability to manage the physical needs of the patient
- empower you to communicate with patients, their relatives and friends and manage their psychological and emotional aspects of cancer
Staff expertise
Our staff include qualified therapy radiographers and other health professionals who are experts in their fields and come with a lot of experience.
We pride ourselves on the levels of academic, clinical and pastoral support our students can expect, including year and personal tutors, disability support and clinical tutor support, with a lecturing team who are accessible and welcoming.
Facilities
The students on our radiography courses use the following facilities to support their clinical practice learning:
- laboratory-based equipment such as ‘VERT’ (a radiotherapy treatment simulation system)
- radiotherapy planning computers
- a computer imaging suite
Clinical placements
In addition to the use of our facilities, we help our students find clinical placements, as we believe that the best way to gain clinical skills and knowledge is by hands-on experience that can be gained by working in our partner clinical placement hospitals.
We have a dedicated team that manages and supports clinical placements. The team involves our University lecturers, practice educators and clinical co-ordinators who work together to ensure that your clinical practice experience is of the highest quality.
