Overview

What is a dietitian?

Dietetics and nutrition

Dietitians are highly qualified, registered health care professionals who are concerned with optimising the health and wellbeing of individuals and groups through good nutrition.

As a dietitian, your job would be to:

  • work on a one-to-one basis with people
  • assess their nutritional status
  • plan how this can be optimised
  • teach them how this can be achieved

This may be to help:

  • those suffering from medical conditions improve their symptoms
  • individuals struggling with weight loss
  • those who wish to lead a healthier lifestyle

Actively promoting good health by facilitating positive food choices to people of all ages would feature prominently in your role.

What will I do when I graduate?

Dietitians work in a variety of different settings, including:
  • hospitals (NHS and private)
  • outpatient clinics
  • education
  • freelance
  • media
  • sport

Specialist areas include:

  • burns
  • cardiology
  • diabetes
  • gastroenterology
  • metabolic
  • mental health
  • obesity
  • paediatrics
  • surgery

What do the dietetics courses offer me?

Some of our innovative programmes are approved by the Health Professions Council and are delivered over 3 extended years in partnership with the NHS Midlands and East. On our courses you will:

  • Spent more time in practice than any other university in the UK
  • Study over a three-year period instead of four years
  • Select your own programme of study appropriate to your own interests and area of practice

What is a nutritionist?

Nutrition is the study of nutrients in food, how nutrients are used by the body, and the relationship between diet, health and disease. Nutritionists work in different roles including public health, health improvement, health policy and local and national government.

Most of the major food manufacturers and retailers employ nutritionists and food scientists but opportunities also arise in research, education and journalism. There are also many opportunities for nutritionists to work within sports and exercise industries and for charitable organisations working in developing countries.

Many employers of nutritionists in all sectors preferentially recruit registered nutritionists.

Research

Dietetic research is a growing area within the School with a strong emphasis on studies relating to clinical and public health practice.
