School Direct routes

Students in classThe following School Direct routes will available in schools working with the University of Hertfordshire in 2013-14:

  • School Direct (salaried) for trainees working in Primary or Secondary settings.
  • School Direct (self funded) for trainees working in Independent Schools
  • School Direct (training) for trainees in Primary or Secondary settings who are PGCE students at the University of Hertfordshire.

Primary school direct routes

School Direct (salaried)

The University of Hertfordshire offers School Direct (Salaried) for primary phases, which includes a Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) plus 30 Masters level credits (Level 7).

Schools employ trainees during their training period as unqualified teachers.

The National College of Teaching and Leadership provides funding towards the cost of the course and the salary of the trainee.

School Direct (training programme)

School Direct (training programme) for primary phases includes Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and 60 Masters level credits (Level 7).

Trainees have a more gradual introduction into teaching than those on the salaried route, complemented by school led and campus based training.

Schools do not employ trainees, but are responsible with the University of Hertfordshire for their training.

Trainees have access to ITT bursaries and Student Loan Company finance if eligible.

Secondary School Direct routes

School Direct (salaried)

The University of Hertfordshire offers School Direct (Salaried) for secondary phases (all subjects), which includes a Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) plus 30 Masters level credits (Level 7).

Schools employ the trainees during their training period as unqualified teachers.

The National College of Teaching and Leadership provides funding towards the cost of the course and the salary of the trainee for some subjects.

The only subjects for secondary that are funded are:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Computer Science
  • English
  • Geography
  • Greek
  • History
  • Latin
  • Maths
  • Modern Foreign Languages
  • Music
  • Physical Education
  • Physics

School Direct (training programme)

School Direct (Training Programme) for secondary phases includes Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and 60 Masters level credits (Level 7).
