School Direct information
We offer the following School Direct routes for those training in primary or secondary settings, including Special Schools and Pupil Referral Units:- Unsalaried - where trainees pay fees and may be entitled to training bursaries.
- Salaried - where trainees are employed as unqualified teachers by their training school.
Schools are allocated training places through the National College for Teaching and Leadership.
School Direct (unsalaried) – Training Programme
With the University of Hertfordshire, the main features of this programme are:
- Trainees are enrolled as full-time postgraduate students at the University of Hertfordshire studying for a Primary or Secondary Postgraduate Certificate in Education(PGCE at Masters' Level).
- At the end of the programme, successful trainees will be awarded a Primary or Secondary PGCE, which includes recommendation to the National College for Teaching and Leadership for Qualified Teacher Status.
- Trainees may have a student loan/grant for living expenses while training and to pay University of Hertfordshire fees for PGCE of £9,000.
- Bursaries are available for some subjects.
- Trainees have a home school who were involved in their recruitment and will lead their training, including providing a mentor.
- There is an expectation that the school or consortium of schools will employ the trainee once they have qualified.
- The accredited provider remains accountable for the quality of the training and ensuring the training meets and continues to meet the Initial Teacher Training criteria.
School Direct (salaried)
With the University of Hertfordshire, the main features of this programme are:
- It is directed towards high quality graduates with three or more years' career experience.
- Schools employ the trainees as unqualified teachers.
- Trainees are enrolled as part-time postgraduate students at the University of Hertfordshire
- At the end of the programme successful trainees gain 30 credits at Masters level and are recommended for Qualified Teacher Status.
- There is an expectation that the school or consortium of schools continue to employ the trainee once they have qualified.
- The accredited provider remains accountable for the quality of the training and ensuring the training meets and continues to meet the ITT criteria, therefore a proportion of the funding will be paid to the provider.
Funding
Funding is provided from the National College for Teaching and Leadership and this reflects priorities in:
- subjects or specialism
- location of school
- their percentage of Free School Meals (FSM). Those with over 35% FSM attract 10% extra funding.
