What does a BA in Education Studies involve?
You can combine your study
The BA Education Studies offers students the opportunity to combine study of the nature of, and contemporary issues in, Education with study in:
Its design draws on a wide range of disciplines and offers options and flexibility to suit students from a diverse range of backgrounds with different interests in education, learning and development.
Students can study:
- full-time (3 years)
- part-time (6 years)
- through work-based learning and e-learning
Students develop personally, professionally and academically, enhancing their ability to think critically and to think critically about education.
They deepen their understand of work in educational contexts, engage with fundamental questions concerning the aims and values of education and its relationship to society and learn to appreciate the problematic nature of educational theory, policy and practice.
The programme introduces the major themes of education and reviews the nature and impact of current national initiatives in education against a background of understanding education as an academic discipline.
As well as modules focusing on Early Years, Modern Foreign Languages and Mathematics elements of the programme offer the option to explore:
- the psychology of education
- learning theory
- children's literature
- education in popular culture and literature
- diversity and inclusion in the workplace
- personal and professional development
- contemporary issues in education and society
- thinking skills
- global issues in education
- historical perspectives on education
This degree combines the study of the disciplines of education with innovative approaches to study and own learning.

Careers
On graduation a number of different pathways will be open.
You may choose to work in the field of education administration and management in the local authority sector, or in other public and private sector contexts such as:
- the civil service
- Early Years settings
- educational administration
- further education
- health work
- learning support roles
- the police
- the prison service
- staff development
You may decide to continue your studies with a Master's degree.
You could follow a career in education or Early Years practice or could use your degree as a strong foundation for entry into a wide range of other professions.
Alternatively, if you decide that you want to move into a career in primary school teaching, you could consider a PGCE qualification following your degree, and enter teaching with the advantage of a strong theoretical background.
With the growing emphasis on education in all aspects of public and political life this degree offers an opportunity to understand, explore and make an informed contribution to education debates and to develop your ability to work in a wide variety of settings.
