Research in the School of Computer Science
The majority of research in the School of Computer Science takes place within a dedicated Research Centre, the Centre for Computer Science and Informatics Research (CCSIR).
The CCSIR is part of the University's Science and Technology Research Institute (STRI). Within the CCSIR there are several research groups. These groups cover:
- Adaptive Systems (including robotics)
- Algorithms
- Biological and Neural Computation
- Systems and Software Engineering

Research activities within the School of Computer Science also focus on Plagiarism Detection and Speech Recognition.
In addition, several members of the School work in the Blended Learning Unit (BLU) on the application of technology to Learning and Teaching.
RAE 2008
In the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008, over half the research outputs in Computer Science at the University of Hertfordshire were rated at world-leading or internationally excellent.
The RAE is conducted every seven years by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) to assess the quality of research in UK universities. In Computer Science 10% of outputs were rated at 4 stars (world leading) and 45% at 3 stars (internationally excellent). 25 FTE Category A staff were submitted. In each of the previous three RAEs, including the most recent in 2001, research in Computer Science achieved a rating of 4 (Nationally Excellent).
