Lord Thurso hosts UH at the House of Commons

The President of the Tourism Society, Lord Thurso, requested the company of our Tourism, Hospitality and Events Management programme (THEM) at the Tourism Society Annual Dinner that was held at the House of Commons on 25 April 2013. His invitation was well received as 21 staff, alumni and students made their way through to the Cromwell Green and into the members' dining room. It was a wonderful experience to dine in this prestigious venue and network with industry leaders. The evening provided thought-provoking speeches from Jonathan Neame - Chairman of the British Beer and Pub Association, he told the audience that traditional British pubs are important in attracting foreign tourists. Deidre Wells - Head of Tourism at the Department of Culture, Media and Sport affirmed that the legacy of London 2012 and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee will endure for the future of Britain's tourism industry. The role of academia was specially recognized as key to developing tourism. UH recently celebrated 21 years of offering the Tourism programme and a very positive impression was given of the University.

MBA Alumni form maiden committee

On Friday 26 April, a group of eight MBA Alumni met at the Wicked Lady in Wheathampstead to initiate the first ever committee for the MBA programme. In attendance were Bryn Sutton, Felix Donkor, Hajre Hyseni, Jin Li, Kenny Luro, Nick Skinner, Peter Buckley and Xheladin Pira – a mix of senior and recent MBA graduates all keen to raise the level of intra MBA engagement. They will be enabling employability, professional development, mentoring and curriculum enhancement. It was a significant occasion for the distinguished MBA programme that has been running for 25 years in 2013, and they were joined by senior HBS staff. Our Community Thriving Together

There is a lot to celebrate not long after our Networking Event and EPAS reaccreditation. For EPAS , the vibes from the panel of assessors from Brussels was very positive and it is looking all the more likely that we will retain this prestigious status for 5 more years! For many more reasons the time has come to take our party to the continent after two successive years in London. It is always memorable when we catch up so this time in Paris we will be doing it in style.

Please see the programme for Friday 28 and Saturday 29 June 2013.

Tickets are available and for all enquiries please email Adah

BA International Business Alumni Make Home Call

On Tuesday 26 February, a group of 11 BA International Business Alumni returned to UH to meet current students and staff, and to tour the de Havilland campus. It was all new to David Butler (graduated 1997) and Tim Knowles (graduated 2003), both of whom studied in the old Balls Park campus at Hertford. Even the others were clearly but pleasantly surprised at the major facelift the campus had undergone since they last visited – we showed off the mezzanine!

For the group, coming back was more than a tour; it was about giving back to UH and speaking to students currently on the BA International Business programme. Together, they tackled questions about studying abroad, employability, the opportunities that the course provides and general life experiences since graduation. It turned out to be an excellent networking event attended by the Dean of the Business School and other senior staff.

Facing current students, the alumni answered questions and shared their experiences to an enthusiastic crowd, and in fact, the students were obviously disappointed when the session came to an 'official' end. But the chatting continued till past 10.00pm; clearly these 11 were aiming for the 11th hour. They came from far and wide - Birmingham, Dubai, Johannesburg, Krakow, London, Montpellier, New Jersey and Vancouver.

What you liked about Hertfordshire Business School:

The Tourism Management degree offered a wide variety of modules that enabled me to get a sound understanding of the industry and the business world as a whole. The campus itself offered state of the art teaching facilities along with supportive teaching staff. This in turn enabled me to leave HBS with sound employment prospects.

What you do in your job:

I work with colleagues within the business to ensure that new products are delivered to specification, on time and within budget. This has included the integration of a new First class cabin at Gatwick and a refreshment of our World Traveller Plus product on board. I also supported British Airways with the launch of a hand baggage only fare at Gatwick.

Whom you would like to connect with in the Alumni LinkedIn Network:

I would like to connect with current students who are interested in getting into the tourism industry and teaching staff who are looking for a subject matter expert of the aviation industry.
