National Scholarship Programme

What is the National Scholarship Programme?

The National Scholarship Programme is a Government initiative to help with the costs associated with going to University.

All eligible University of Hertfordshire applicants joining in September 2013 will receive this scholarship. We expect approximately 650 scholarships to be awarded.

The scholarship is for applicants to undergraduate degree courses (excluding Extended Degrees).

How much is the scholarship worth?

The total value of each scholarship is £6,000.

The scholarship will be awarded over 3 years.

First Year - value £3,000

  • £1,000 tuition fee waiver
  • Access to a final year mentor (value £300)
  • Freshers' Pass (value £50 tbc)
Plus a choice from the following up to the value of £1,650
  • Accommodation (value £1,650)
  • Laptop package (value £700)
  • University of Hertfordshire Restaurant Vouchers (up to value £500)
  • Uno Bus Pass - Zone 1 (value £300)
  • Uno Bus Pass - Zone 2 (value £400)
  • Gym Pass (up to value £250)
  • Book Allowance (up to value £350)
  • University of Hertfordshire Nursery Child Care Vouchers (up to value £1,650)
  • University of Hertfordshire Accommodation Student Parking Permit (£135)

Second and Final Year - value £1,500 per year

  • £500 cash contribution towards living costs
  • £500 voucher to support subsistence e.g. travel expenses
  • £200 book voucher
  • Access to a final year mentor (value £300)

The scholarship will not be awarded during a placement year.

Eligibility criteria

Find out if you are eligible for the University of Hertfordshire National Scholarship Programme by using our online eligibility checker.

To be eligible for the National Scholarship Programme at the University of Hertfordshire you must:

  • live in an area with a low level of progression to university and have a household income of £25,000 or less. Use our online tool to check your postcode
  • or be in receipt of incapacity benefit
  • or identified as a 'Looked After Child' (Using the statutory definition)

    The Children (Leaving Care) Act 2000 states that a care leaver is someone who has been in the care of the Local Authority for a period of 13 weeks or more, spanning their 16th birthday.

You will not be eligible for the National Scholarship Programme if:

  • you are applying for a course that is NHS funded or TDA funded
  • you are applying for an Extended Degree
  • you are continuing from one University of Hertfordshire (H36) course to another, for example, progressing from a Foundation Degree or Extended Degree
  • you are transferring to the University of Hertfordshire from another University or Higher Education institution
  • you are applying for a postgraduate course
  • you are a looking to study part-time at less than 25 per cent intensity of the full-time equivalent
  • you have your course fees paid or part-paid through a sponsorship arrangement
  • you are an ELQ student

Do I need to apply for the scholarship?

No, there is not a separate application process for this scholarship. Just apply to the University of Hertfordshire course/courses of your choice as usual through UCAS.

So we can check your eligibility, you will need to apply for student finance in the normal way. From the information supplied to Student Finance England we will automatically determine whether you are entitled to the National Scholarship Programme. If you are entitled to an award we will contact you in due course.
