University Technical College Opening
As part of educational developments in Hertfordshire, a new University Technical College (UTC) will be opening in September 2013.
The new Elstree University Technical College (UTC), sponsored by Meller Educational Trust and co-sponsored by the University of Hertfordshire, will focus on supporting 14 – 19 year old students who aspire to work in the entertainment, film, television, theatre, visual arts, digital communications and electrical engineering industries.
The Elstree UTC is a first for Hertfordshire and will offer full-time courses for 600 students, initially offering 90 places for year 10 students and 140 places for year 12 students.
Dr Stephen Boffey, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Regional Affairs at the University of Hertfordshire said: 'Students graduating from the Elstree UTC will be better equipped, more experienced and confident for the world of work. The University is committed to supporting the needs of today’s students and is working closely with industry related businesses.'
University Technology Colleges are a new initiative promoted by Baker Dearing Education Trust (BDT). For the past 4 years the BDT has been working with the Department of Education, local employers, universities and further education colleges to develop 15 brand new University Technical Colleges.
Each UTC is sponsored by a university and employers are involved from the start in shaping the curriculum the colleges will run.
