4,500 undergraduate and research students receive their awards in November

Over 4,000 new alumni have successfully graduated from the University of Hertfordshire. The week of 19 November was the beginning of the research and undergraduate awards ceremonies where new graduates, their parents and friends were invited to the Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Albans to celebrate their academic success.  

Through 13 ceremonies, from 19-23 November, 4,500 students graduated with degrees and doctorates ranging from the various sciences, business, law and education, through to the diverse arts programmes available at the University.  

At one ceremony, the University honoured the legendary James Bond actor, Sir Roger Moore, for his outstanding contribution to the UK film and television industry.  

Honorary awards and fellowships were also awarded to:

  • Dr Sebastian Faulks CBE, esteemed author
  • Mr Syd Nadim, entrepreneur and founder of Clock Ltd
  • Mr David Sproul, alumnus and chief executive officer and senior partner of Deloitte LLP
  • Mrs Patricia Lott, the University’s first director of personnel Mr Sebastian Conran, entrepreneur and product designer
  • Mr Graham Blyth, British audio engineer
  • Mrs Cheryl Beattie, outstanding contributor to the field of learning disability
  • Mr Michael Beaman, contributor to pharmacy education in the UK
  • Sir Graham Wynne, chief executive for the RSPB, prior to his retirement in 2010
  • Mrs Anne Dunbar, manager and clinician in the field of radiology
  • Ms Karen Middleton CBE, chief health professions officer at the Department of Health
  • Commander Sarah West RN, alumna and the first woman to command a frontline warship in the 500-year history of the Royal Navy
  • Mr Bob Forrest, principal technical officer of Bayfordbury from the mid-1980s to his retirement in 2010
  • Mr Jody Cundy MBE, alumnus and paralympic athlete  

This year, graduates were also able to purchase certificate scrolls which raised over £2,000 to support for the University of Hertfordshire’s Diamond Fund. This fund is designed to help students through recognition awards, and supporting societies and sports teams.
