Celebrating 20 Years Of Physiotherapy
Happy birthday to you
This year the School of Health and Social Work celebrates 20 years of the BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy course at the University. The first course was validated in March 1993 and in September that year the first 40 students had registered on the course.
Over the years, the course has had the backing of key professional groups, including accreditation by both the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP).
It has been adapted to meet the requirements of contemporary physiotherapy practice, including the changing environments in which physiotherapists practice, inter-professional working and the increasing emphasis on health and well-being.
Jane Simmonds, Physiotherapy’s Professional Lead said: ‘This special year is a great opportunity to highlight our alumni successes which will be celebrated through our ‘Where are you now?’ campaign. We are so proud of everything our graduates have gone on to achieve, and we would love to hear more stories. We already know that one of our graduates accompanied the European Ryder golf team on their successful campaign in America last year and at least 2 graduates have demonstrated outstanding sporting achievements, one winning Bronze in the World Bobsleigh championships and a second representing Team GB in Handball at the London 2012 Olympics.’
Physiotherapy provision at the University has continued to develop and in 2000, the original framework for Physiotherapy Continuing Professional Development was approved. This framework set out a structured programme for post-graduate studies which is now a comprehensive MSc Advanced Physiotherapy course linking in with other professions within the School.
If you are one of our physiotherapy graduates please watch this space for further information about a potential reunion in the summer. Alternatively, keep up to date on our Facebook and Twitter pages!
